The woman pictured here is Stephanie Byram, a breast cancer and double
mastectomy survivor. She participated in several events here at NDSU back
in February, which I attended. I knew next to nothing about breast cancer
at that time and found it odd that the term "mutilation" was often used to
describe what happened to women that suffered from the disease. Stephanie;
however, is a very strong and wonderful woman. She has accepted what has
happened to her as a part of life. At any rate, this piece is pretty
simple, yet still one of my favorites. (See if you can guess how/what the
scratches are.) She has her eyes closed (or mainly closed) as a symbol of
trying to hide or deny what has happened to her.
