THE SCHWERTFEGER / SCHWERT FAMILY:

Links and Resources for
Research Databases

Databases:

  • FamilySearch - Large, searchable LDS database for surnames. Tremendous resource.

  • FamilySearch Place Name Index - LDS database for locating church and civil records for locations across Europe.

  • International Genealogical Index Search Site - Provides batch numbers and direct links into LDS FamilySearch IGI database. Homepage in German, with English option for the search available by clicking the British flag (far upper left). The following link will narrow the search only to West Prussia.

  • Ellis Island Records - A terrific resource for genealogical studies. However, since most of the Schwerts (Schwertfegers) arrived in the United States before the opening of Ellis Island (1892), this web site may be of marginal use to the search for this family.

  • Castle Garden - CastleGarden.org offers free access to a database of information on 10 million immigrants from 1830 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened. Over 73 million Americans can trace their ancestors to this early immigration period.

  • One-Step Webpages -Stephen Morse's comprehensive access to genealogical databases, plus other useful links.

  • United States Government Land Records - Access to federal land conveyance records for the Public Land States. This is particularly a great resource for those researching family histories in the central and western United States.

  • U.S. GenWeb Project - Front page to a comprehensive effort to provide genealogical information on those who settled in the United States.
