August J. Schlee was born on November 27, 1887, in Buffalo, New York. He was baptized on December 4, 1887, by Father Ferdinand Kolb of Saint Boniface R.C. Church, 124 Locust Street, Buffalo.

According to his 1936 Social Security Application, August was employed by the G. Lang Brewery on Best Street in Buffalo and resided at 160 Zelmer Street. He was married to Katherine Sander (born 1889), and they had three children.

Katherine died on January 1, 1959. August died of acute pneumonia on May 15, 1971. Both are interred in Lot 333, Section C-1, at Mount Calvary Cemetery (Pine Hill) in Cheektowaga, NY.
