This project seeks to reconstruct the histories for descendants of Carl (= Karl) and Veronica (née Modrzejewska) Schwertfeger, who took on the surname "Schwert" upon their emigration to the United States.
Church records confirm that the family originated in the region of Sobbowitz in West Prussia, about 40 km south of Danzig. After World War II, what remained of West Prussia became part of northern Poland. Sobbowitz is now Sobowidz, and Danzig is now Gdańsk.
Some documentation for Veronica, including the death certificate of her daughter Rosalia and Veronica's own death certificate suggests that Veronica's children were uncertain of their mother's surname. However, church records of Gardschau and of Kladau, West Prussia confirm that Veronica's surname was "Modrzejewska."

Franz Carl, Johann, Francisca, Friedrich, Maria, Joseph, and Rosalie Schwertfeger (children of Carl and Veronica) emigrated from West Prussia to the United States. Franz Carl, Johann, and Francisca arrived in 1881. In 1887, Carl and Veronica emigrated from West Prussia with Friedrich, Maria, Joseph, and Rosalia. All of the family initially settled in the industrial city of Buffalo in western New York State, where they shortened their surname to "Schwert."
We invite your interest and participation in this project to fully reconstruct the history of this lineage of the Schwertfeger and Schwert families. Information and questions can be directed to any of our contact people.
